Sample catalogue

Currently, the National Biobank for Rare Diseases (BioNER) houses collections of biological samples corresponding to more than 900 rare diseases, as well as autism spectrum disorders (ASD). These collections include samples from affected individuals, their family members, and healthy donors used as controls, constituting an invaluable resource for biomedical research. BioNER preserves various types of biological samples, including DNA, serum, plasma, fibroblasts, and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), which are collected and stored according to strict quality criteria that ensure their suitability for national and international research projects.

The distribution of BioNER donors, classified according to the CIE-10, reflects a broad representation of rare diseases. The predominant group consists of diseases of the nervous system (42%), followed by congenital malformations (21%) and intellectual disabilities and behavioral disorders (13%).

Sample request

To request biological samples from the National Rare Diseases Biobank (BioNER), researchers must complete and sign a Sample Request Form, which should be sent by email to bioner@isciii.es.

The following documentation must be submitted together with the application form:

  • A summary of the research project, written in clear and understandable language.
  • A favorable opinion or approval letter from the Ethics Committee for the project for which samples are being requested from BioNER.

Once the documentation has been received, BioNER will acknowledge receipt of the request and proceed with its evaluation by the relevant committees. Subsequently, the applicant will be informed of the outcome of the evaluation and of the next steps regarding the processing of the request and, where applicable, the release of the requested samples.

For any questions concerning the application process or the available collections, please contact BioNER at: bioner@isciii.es
